An edible solution to a wicked problem

Evo & Co., an Indonesian social enterprise, provides biodegradable alternatives to single-use plastic products using rice and seaweed.

Indonesia is the world’s second-largest contributor of plastic pollution in the ocean. According to the World Bank, 20% of the country’s plastic waste is believed to end up in rivers and coastal waters. Every 20 minutes, the equivalent of a 10-ton truckload of plastic is dumped into the waters around the Indonesian Archipelago. Single-use, plastic food packaging is one of the main culprits. With their brand Evoware, Evo & Co. provides seaweed-based cups, food wrapping and sachets that are both dissolvable and edible. Their second brand Evoworld, makes biodegradable alternatives to plastic from cassava, sugarcane and rice. By providing new alternatives to single-use plastic, the company also conducts educational campaigns in the forms of a drama musical, beach cleanups and plastic offsetting. All Evo & Co. products are biodegradable and compostable, the vegan, edible ones are even rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals.
