A bird’s-eye view on water use

ConserWater uses satellite data and artificial intelligence to help predict how much water farmers should provide to their crops

Without the proper information, it’s easy to give too little or too much water to crops. Underwatering can lead to reduced yields and overwatering can lead to both water losses and crop damage. ConserWater, headquartered in California, USA, has developed an AI-tool that uses NASA satellite, weather and other real-time data along with deep learning to estimate soil moisture and predict the water needs of crops. The technology allows predictions to be made anywhere, anytime – and regardless of a farm’s size. The company says that it can do this to the same level of accuracy as ground-based soil sensors and reduce water use by over 30%. The technology also helps farmers to save energy and apply more accurate amounts of fertilizers to their fields.
