A fish out of (salt)water

Gårdsfisk created a system for land-based fish farming to integrate with crop production

Global aquaculture production has now surpassed wild catch. Farming fish in aquatic environments, however, can cause habitat destruction and water pollution. Gårdsfisk, a Swedish company, has created a closed fish farming system with the aim of zero emissions and negative environmental impact. This on-farm system controls water quality, energy use, and takes care of eutrophication, the excess of nutrients in a water body that causes algal blooms and depletes oxygen levels. The cultivation takes place in large pools in a closed system, where the residual nutrient water can be reused as fertilizer on the fields. Gårdsfisk aims to help improve Swedish food production and increase the profitability of Swedish farms.
